Stadium

St Mary’s Stadium has been the home of Southampton since 2001, when the club moved away from The Dell where they had played for the previous 103 years. St Mary’s Stadium was constructed between December 1999 and July 2001 at a total cost of £32 million. It officially opened on the 1st of August 2001 with a friendly between Southampton and Spanish side Espanyol (3-4). Until 2006, the stadium was called The Friends Provided St Mary’s Stadium as part of a sponsorship deal. The Club moved from The Dell to the new St Mary’s Stadium in 2001. In some ways this saw the Club returning to its roots as it was originally founded as ‘Southampton St Marys’, hence the club nickname ‘The Saints’. To be truthful the stadium looks, quite simply, superb. The stadium is completely enclosed, with all corners being filled with seating. There are also two great looking screens sitting on the roofs at each end. Running around three sides of the stadium, just below the roof, is a transparent perspex strip allows more light and facilitates pitch growth. On the remaining side there is a row of executive boxes. The crowd are set well back from the playing action, as firstly there is a cinder track surrounding the playing surface and secondly the pitch itself must be the largest in the League (although the playing area does not use all of it). Outside the stadium behind the Itchen Stand is a statue of former Southampton legend Ted Bates.

Hospitality Entrance

An entrance as one would expect at a Premier League club. A posh yet stylish main reception where one is welcomed professionally yet attentive. Upon showing our tickets we were friendly greeted, given our Terry Paine hospitality package bracelet and were shown to our suite.

The main entrance opens 2,5 hours before kick-off so be sure to arrive early to get the best out of your package.

Restaurant

Excellent quality all the way. Very good food ingredients that were presented well. We enjoyed a three course menu with a choice of main course accompanied by a great wine selection that included a variety of white, rose and red wines. A point of attention would be that the wine knowledge of the waiting staff could be improved (couldn’t figure out what a Zinfandel wine was, although it was listed on the menu). Next to that our main course was served while we were having a stadium tour. When arriving back in the Suite our food was almost cold. The dessert was handled very well by serving it upon our request during half time. Next to that during half time some cakes and sweets were served as well as a great cheese selection which was served at full-time.

We have to mention that Southampton is the first club ever to create a separate menu for vegetarian guests, even taking allergies into account. So no worries for vegans or guests with allergies. Perfectly taken care of. A great feature!

Business lounge

The Terry Paine Suite is located on the first floor and has a chic interior with shared tables of 6-10 persons per table. In the centre on the right side is a bar located that serves premium drinks. One is friendly welcomed by Southampton Football Club Hostesses and shown to your table. The table itself is neatly decorated and match day magazines as well as menus and a cooler with beer, wine and water is already provided. What is especially noteworthy is that one of our guests got her own menu that took into account her dietary wishes. A keen eye for detail! Normally the MoM presentations also take place in this Suite but due to the fact that Southampton played their final home game the squad gave a round of appreciation on the pitch and therefore no MoM presentations were scheduled. There are no pitch views (no suite has pitch view) and this is unfortunate as it would have really added value to the package.

Seating

Seated on the Itchen Stand almost right in front of the halfway line offers the best views in the house. What could be improved here is the quality of the seats (yes it is padded but the seats are not that luxurious) and the distance between the seats could be a little bit bigger. All in all a very good seating arrangement from which the terry Paine Suite is easily accessible. Southampton FC Review Sport Hospitality Ticket.

Good to know

A stadium tour on the day itself is not possible, but we were able to secure a private guided tour throughout the hospitality areas together with Jemaine Jarvis, a professional and experienced colleague from the sales department.
